Proposed changes would shift focus of state compliance with the IDEA to student outcomes

According to Education Week, Federal special education officials on Monday at the IDEA Leadership Conference voiced their commitment to focus more on the progress of students receiving special education services rather than concentrating on whether states are technically upholding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). One of the changes being considered is how state ratings are determined, in particular the Department of Education will stop collecting data about the under-representation of students from some racial and ethnic groups in different disability categories.
