Medicaid Buy-In for Workers with Disabilities

The Medicaid Buy-In for Workers with Disabilities (MBIWD) program allows individuals with disabilities who are working to qualify for Medicaid with higher income and resource limits, and buy into Medicaid by paying a premium based on income. The program went into effect April 1, 2008.

To qualify, you must be U.S. citizen or qualified alien, a resident of Ohio between the ages of 16 and 64 with a disability (as defined by the Social Security Administration or Ohio Medicaid), meet certain financial criteria, be employed in paid, taxed work and pay a premium (if applicable). Individuals with higher incomes should still apply because income disregards, deductions, credits and work expenses are considered in determining financial eligibility.

Individuals already receiving Medicaid services who are interested in MBIWD should contact their caseworker or the Medicaid Consumer Hotline at 1-800-324-8680. A face-to-face interview is not required for this program.

Individuals who are new to Medicaid can apply. If the person does not have a disability determination from the Social Security Administration, Ohio Medicaid will make a determination. The individual will be asked to provide medical evidence of their disability.

To apply, complete the following forms:
